Auction Spotlight: Irish Whiskey Auctions Feb 2021

It's been a little over a month since the last installment of Auction Spotlight, and what a month it has been. We had our first post brexit auctions which a lot of people were wary of bidding on due to the unknown custom charges and it turns out they were right to be wary. I've heard of some people paying 30-40% over the hammer price when including the fees from the auction house and the custom charges on top of that. Thankfully it looks like one of the UK auction sites, Whisky Auctioneer, have opened a German distribution and collection center, where you can send bottles to and they will store them there and those in the EU can bid on those and avoid the custom charges as it will never be in the UK. To do this they are adding an icon to each lot, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out!

Auction Spotlight: WhiskyAuctioneer - December 2020

It's been a little over a week since the end of Irish Whiskey Auctions December Auction and we've had some time to digest the prices. A great indicator of if a price will stay at the level it reached in an Irish auction, is to take a look at the auction sites across the pond. This particular one however, I'm sure had people like myself that were apprehensive of bidding due to the new brexit restrictions and how much a bottle would actually end up costing after the hammer was slammed. Sit back, relax and grab a dram. Let's dissect WhiskyAuctiooner December 2020 Auction.

Currach Atlantic Wakame Seaweed Cask

Currach have been doing some pretty interesting stuff, I got to try their initial release - Atlantic Kombu - at distilled.online by L Mulligans. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise at how the seaweed interacted with the whiskey, and carried through to the final product considering it's used in the charring of the barrel process, rather than drying the malt which is usually how peat influences a whiskey.

Teeling Wonders of Wood: Amburana Cask

The very first in our series of Wonder of Wood bottlings. A 14 year old single malt aged initially in bourbon barrels and then in virgin Amburana Brazilian hardwood. Challenging the conception of traditional whiskey flavours, this unique Irish whiskey has a striking carrot cake flavour to it with hints of vanilla, cardamom and walnut.

5 tips to help you identify flavors in whiskey

Have you ever read tasting notes, or sat down with another whiskey drinker who just pulls these tasting notes out of the whiskey, that you feel they must be making it up? I felt that way a few years back when I started drinking whiskey. "There's no way you're tasting those flavors, it's just a burn smell and a prickle down the throat!". Little did I know about whiskey palates, or even food palates if I'm honest.

Spade and Bushel 10 year old Single Malt

Mayo, Maigh Eo, Plain of the yew trees. A place of solitude and retreat for many people, and a popular destination for tourists to get a sense of 'real' Ireland. Something that will only become more popular with Joe Bidens recent election to the office of the President of the United States, who discovered in 2016 that his great-great grandfather on his fathers side emigrated from Knockmore, Co Mayo.
