The Dalwhinnie distillery was originally built under a different name, ‘Strathspey’, in 1897. It was renamed ‘Dalwhinnie’ not too long after when the facility was sold during some financial difficulties. Similar to a lot of Scottish distilleries, it changed hands many times. It has ended up under the drinks giant Diageo (formerly DCL). Dalwhinnie is one of the highest elevated distilleries in Scotland at 1164 feet above sea level, and has recorded some of the lowest temperatures in the UK. Dalwhinnie still uses worm tubs (wooden ones) and only has two stills, one wash and one spirit. Much of the distillery’s output is used in the Black & White blends. Dalwhinnie is part of Diageo’s Classic Malts series, representing the (Central) Highlands, though it is also part of the Speyside region.

Overall – a great whiskey at a great price. It’s approachable on all levels and I’m sure that this could convert non-whiskey drinkers to whiskey.
