Paddy Irish Whiskey

I’d only ever poured Paddy into Irish coffees, so I sat down and tried it neat at €25 to see what is really in there.

Up until 2016 Paddy was owned by Irish Distillers (Pernod Ricard) until its sale to Sazerac in the US. Paddy is still distilled and aged in the Midleton Distillery. Comparatively to other whiskeys, particularly blends, from Midleton, Paddy has a lower Pot Still content and a higher malt content in the blend. Going into this tasting I’ve only really used Paddy in the likes of Irish Coffees, and Hot Toddys and the main thing is the flavour of the whiskey is not overpowering at all so you can enjoy the coffee/flavours you build around the alcoholic drink.

Nose (16/33)

Light on the nose with some acetone and that sharp young alcohol smell shining through. Very approachable and on the same level as other entries such as Jameson, Bushmills, Roe & Co

Taste (20/34)

Not a lot to write home about here though it does exactly what it says on the bottle. Soft and mellow, sweet and malty

Finish (16/33)

Short and dry very easy drinker for any new drinkers trying to expand their whiskey knowledge

Score

52/100

Overall: This wouldn’t be my go to budget drink, or a drink I would generally sip on and explore. It’s a nice entry to Irish whiskey, and a logical step for new drinkers who might’ve started on Jameson to go to and checkout without breaking the bank.

Please let me know on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter if you’ve tried it and agree or disagree and share your notes.
