Lambay Whiskey have just announced private island tours for groups of up to 12, from €2,700 (ex VAT), which works out at €225 a head for a full group.

Some of you might know Lambay as the island barely 3 miles off the east coast of Ireland. It’s home to puffins, seabirds and even a troupe of wallabies! W.B. Yeats visited in the 1880s and compared it to landing on a remote South Seas island.

Cecil and Maude Baring acquired Lambay in 1904. The castle was in ruins, so they hired the renowned Anglo-Irish architect Edwin Lutyens to bring it back to life. It’s now protected and enhanced by the surrounding sycamore woods and terraced gardens designed by Gertrude Jekyll.

The island is still in the Baring family. In 2017 they partnered with Camus, a family-owned cognac producer, to create Lambay Irish Whiskey. The island is used for ageing and blending, with water from the island’s Trinity Well used in the finishing stages.

What’s involved in the tour?

You start in Malahide, 12 miles north of Dublin City, where a Lambay Brand Ambassador meets you and takes you to your vessel in a privately accessed marina.

A 25 minute boat ride takes in the views of Malahide and the outer views of Lambay.

On arrival you’re greeted by a member of the Baring family and a personal VIP tour of the island, including the historic castle, begins.

After the walking tour of the island’s micro ecosystem, you retire to the Bothy beside the seashore for a tasting of the full Lambay range. You also visit the Sea Cask Room, where maturation happens, and take in the aroma of the ‘Angels’ Share’.

On departure you get a gift of some whiskey goodies.

Sound good?
