Released by ‘The Dublin Liberties’ who were founded back in 2017 with their distillery opening to the public early in 2019, a distillery tour touted to be like no other. Built on historical whiskey land in The Liberties, in a 400 yr old building, one can imagine how the atmosphere and historical presence will affect you touring the working distillery.

So for your math geniuses out there, how does a 2-3 year old distillery have a 10yr old release? This is a common thing nowadays with so many distilleries opening up in Ireland; back when there were as few as 2 working distilleries (Bushmills and Midleton) on the island back in the mid 70’s. Generally speaking, most of the new distilleries will source whiskey from either the old Cooley Distillery, Midleton or Bushmills to begin with to get their brand out there, and do a few things to the product to make it their own. There’s nothing wrong with this in the slightest, it happens in the U.S with a company called MGP being the largest supplier to new distilleries, and as you can imagine, waiting 3 years and a day to bottle your own Irish whiskey is a long time to run at 0 cashflow. Personally I think it would be great to have some information available to know where the liquid comes from so we could start comparing what distilleries do during their extra aging/blending to make a difference to the original product. I have reached out to The Dublin Liberties and will update here if I hear anything back!

Enough of that side track, that’s a whole other topic. Back to the whiskey. Coming in at 60€ @ 46% ABV it’s a decent price for a 10yr old single malt. It’s knocking around the same price as RedBreast 12, GreenSpot, Teelings Brabazon, Roe and Co CaskStrength and the likes, so I would categorize it in the Medium price range. When pouring the whiskey you can see its a light rustic copper colour.

Nose (21/33)

This is light on the nose, some of the flavours subdued by the slightly higher ABV I would imagine. There’s a malty hint that’s shining through at the back. I don’t get too much sweetness that you would expect from a Sherry finished whiskey but there’s some creamy sweetness in it definitely with some vanilla there.

Taste (25/34)

Wow, this likes to take you head on. The taste is hugely influenced by oak spice and you get a lot of heat in the mouth considering it’s only a 46% whiskey, if I hadn’t known that already I would have guessed it was at least 50%. There’s a creamy dark chocolatey note there that lingers in the mouth and makes me feel this would go really well with some ‘After Eights’.

Finish (27/33)

Finish is surprisingly long with spice, spice and more spice. It leaves a lovely tingly feeling in the roof of your mouth and sides of your tongue.

Score

73/100

This is a proper winter whiskey! If you’re feeling cold, take a drink of this and it’ll welcome you with warm arms. It will be interesting to see what else comes from The Liberties Distillery and how their own product will compare to this. They seem to have a great team working down there and I have no doubt we’ll be seeing more of them. It has some tough competition around the same price tag but definitely a different kind of Irish Whiskey that you should try exploring if you want an Irish single malt.

Please let me know on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter if you’ve tried it and agree or disagree and share your notes.

The Dublin Liberties Copper Alley is a 10 year old Irish single malt from a distillery only a couple of years old, which raises an obvious question.

[6
7,9,29,40
post-49","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-review","tag-irish-whiskey","tag-mid-range-price","tag-single-malt","tag-the-dublin-liberties-distillery
["GET
