They generally release a yearly whiskey, Midleton Very Rare, and it is dubbed by some as ‘The Irish Macallan’. There has been some other expressions from them, such as the 20th Anniversary and 30th Pearl Anniversary and Dair Ghaelach to name a few. This particular one is a tip of the hat to Barry Crockett and is part of their core expressions.

Who was Barry Crockett?

Barry Crockett was the first Midleton Master Distiller to be born, raised and work from the distillers cottage located in the heart of the Midleton Distillery operation. He has been immersed in the art of whiskey distilling for almost 50 years. Barry learned his craft from his father and Midleton Master Distiller, Max Crockett; eventually succeeding him as Master Distiller in 1981. He worked as the Master Distiller for over 30 years, 47 years total in Midleton, retiring in 2013 and handing over the reins over to Brian Nation.

This expression was designed as an ode to Barry Crockett’s legacy, and I’m sure he’s very proud to see his name on such an amazing whiskey, with an eye catching presentation box and bottle.

Nose (30/33)

The nose is very inviting, hits you with some strong vanilla bean aromas immediately, with some rich dark brown sugary goodness hidden behind it. You can almost taste manuka honey that lingers around before you sip.

Taste (32/34)

When you sip this you instantly get a very oily mouthfeel, a classic pot still characteristic. There’s a very strong presence of mixed dry fruits, spicy apples nuts and banana cream (like custard creams). You can also get a strong presence of oak spice preparing you for the finish.

Finish (31/33)

Medium to long, hanging around with a tingly spiciness on your tongue and the gums on your molar teeth. I felt like I was eating some apple pie with this finish.

Score

93/100

This is definitely a pinnacle of Irish Whiskey and I don’t think anyone could turn their noses up at this. It is one of the most approachable whiskeys and although I would love a cask strength version of this I think its the right choice putting this out at 46%. You get enough of the heat from the alcohol and oak spices but it remains approachable and friendly to any friends you might have that want to explore Irish whiskey.

Please let me know on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter if you’ve tried it and agree or disagree and share your notes.

Midleton’s tip of the hat to Barry Crockett is a single pot still said to be drawn from casks up to 25 years old, at €225 to €250 a bottle.

[6
7,13,24
post-35","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-review","tag-irish-whiskey","tag-midleton-distillery","tag-old-rare-and-expensive
["GET
