The Famous Grouse Smoky Black was renamed from ‘Black Grouse’ at the end of 2015. This blend is based on peated Islay malts, and boasts being the only blend in the world to use a rare peated whisky from Glenturret, Scotlands oldest working distillery.

It’s a budget blend so it has a lot of competition in that area. At £15 for a full bottle, I don’t know how you couldn’t give it a try!

Nose (20/33)

Surprisingly, a very interesting nose. I get lot of deep orange notes, almost like poached oranges. I get a little hint of cinnamon spice and then a bit of oakiness. Don’t find much smoke but if you take a drop in your hands and rub it together all it leaves is the strong peaty smell you would expect from the name.

Taste (20/34)

Very light tasting, at 40% you wouldn’t expect anything else really. Theres a strong taste of the grain here which could throw some newer whisky drinkers off, but it’s quite an easy drinker.

Finish (20/33)

Finish is medium to long, and where the smokiness shows its head. For drinkers used to smoke they won’t feel much, but anyone new and trying out smokiness it should give a decent indication whether you like smoke or not. It leaves a lingering char taste on your tongue.

Overall, it’s a decent whisky. I’m taking into consideration the fact it’s such an inexpensive whisky, its accessible to any drinker and it’ll definitely be something a bit different to explore in that range.
